What was your life like before the Joyable program?

Before Joyable, I was experiencing intense anxiety across nearly all social situations, and it was making me feel increasingly isolated and miserable. It was getting so that the only person I felt comfortable around was my fiancé. Even friends I had known for years were making me feel nervous.

I decided to try Joyable because although therapy was helping me to gain understanding about the roots of my anxiety, it wasn’t really helping me deal with my anxiety in the here and now. Joyable appealed to me because it offers a structured program of concrete, “hands-on” exercises designed specifically for learning how to manage social anxiety.

The fact that this program is affordable and offered online, so I could do the exercises at my own pace and on my own schedule, with the added coaching support of a real life person, were huge bonuses.

What was your biggest fear before starting?

I suppose that the biggest fear I had about the Joyable program was that it wouldn’t work out for me, and I’d be back to feeling helpless about my ability to do anything about my anxiety again.

However, that fear went away for me very early in the program because I was already gaining valuable insight into my anxiety during the early introductory sections of the program, even before the exposure activities started.

Now that I’ve completed the program, I can say that Joyable has given me a valuable tool kit that I will continue to use to manage my anxiety now and in the future.

How has your life changed since you started Joyable?

Since joining Joyable, I have been able to feel increasingly at ease, which is a big deal for me because I had been feeling absolutely wracked by my anxiety for so long.

I’m able to just be myself more often in social situations and actually enjoy time with friends and family. That is such a gift.

What was the best part of the Joyable program?

I have to give kudos to the new community section in Joyable. At first, I was honestly horrified by the prospect of sharing my activities publicly, but once I started exploring the community site and reading the stories of so many others dealing with the same issues and having the same feelings, it gave me the courage to share my story too.

It seems strange to say that I found community with people that I will never meet in person, but to see others who were brave and vulnerable enough to share their experience was a revelation that made me feel understood and less alone.

Having social anxiety can make you feel like an alien sometimes, but for the first time in the community site I read posts by others that described my own experience almost exactly, and it was a really powerful, eye opening experience for me.

Tell us about your coach.

Kylie was really great. She was really positive and supportive in her feedback, which actually helped me feel more confident in my progress.

Even more than that, her feedback was insightful, helping me to build on the lessons of the Joyable exercises and gain a deeper understanding. She also gave me a few ideas about everyday tricks/tips I could use, like carrying a notecard with helpful thought challenging questions to help me manage my anxiety in unexpected situations.
