“I can actually go out and do things in everyday life without feeling anxious or ashamed of myself.”

Why did you decide to get help?

My life was very quiet and uneventful. My friends were hanging out together but I kept making excuses because I did not want to go out. I would put off grocery buying and other things for as long as possible because it made me extremely uncomfortable speaking to anyone that wasn’t family.

I eventually decided to get help because I was tired of staying inside all the time while my friends had fun. I was extremely frustrated with myself for not being able to handle the activities and interactions that everyone around me did with ease.

How did we alleviate your fears about the program?

My biggest fear was that the program wouldn’t work for me. I was ready to make a change in my life, but I had no idea how to, and I was worried that the program wouldn’t be able to help me.

My fears were largely overcome when I had a kickoff phone call with my coach. It was very encouraging to know that there was a real person on the other end who was friendly and would work with me in order to effect the change I wanted to see in my life.

My concerns turned out to be unfounded; the program was very helpful for me.

I have made more new friends in the few months since I’ve completed the program than I did over the last several years.

How has your life changed since you began the Joyable program?

I’m enjoying myself more. I can actually go out and do things in everyday life without feeling anxious or ashamed of myself. I go outside more and talk more, both to old friends and new people. I have made more new friends in the few months since I’ve completed the program than I did over the last several years.

Overall, there has been a definite improvement in my quality of life. I no longer second guess myself in social situations; in fact, interacting with others feels more natural to me now, whereas before all my interactions felt artificial. I am definitely a happier person.

What was the best part of the Joyable program?

Aside from my coach, it was just learning more about myself. I used to just see my social anxiety as a nebulous cloud that just meant that I would feel bad every time I tried to interact with other people.

Joyable helped me see the exact feelings I had, and then helped me understand why those feelings were wrong. It was a revelatory experience when I began to understand why I felt the way I did, and why I no longer had to feel that way.

Tell us about your Joyable coach.

My coach, Jill, was very friendly and helpful. She helped assuage many of my fears when I first started, and was an encouraging presence throughout my entire experience with the program.

After every activity, she was ready to help me understand what I just did and how it would help me. She would also keep me on track any time I started to lapse on the program. I really liked her efforts in helping me, and see the coach as an integral part of the Joyable experience.

If you were to recommend Joyable to your best friend with social anxiety, what would you say?

Definitely try it out. If you have any questions or misgivings, speak to a coach. They are very encouraging and really want to help you overcome your social anxiety.

You can go at your own pace, and if you follow through, it will definitely change your life. I took a chance on this program, and it paid off immensely. I enjoy talking to other people now, and am much happier.
